By now, you've heard of Bitcoin, but what about Ethereum, Tether or Polkadot? PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla

They are in the top 10 cryptocurrencies out of more than 4,000 in the world right now. Experts say this form of digital money is not just the way of the future, it's here to stay.

Jordan Harold dabbles in the cryptocurrency market. He's a former college football player and played on a startup professional league this past spring.

"I actually had this friend who told me to get this thing Dogecoin," Harold said. "I had no idea what it was. I heard about Bitcoin at the time, so I got a little bit of it. Recently, it kind of made my day."

Harold, who's now a transformation coach, has combined his passion to help with cryptocurrency creating his own coin.

"The coin that was created, that I co-founded, is called Blackchain," Harold said.

It was designed to help bridge the gap in Black and brown communities.

"How my coin is structured, when you purchase it, 10% will go towards causes in the community — financial, literacy, education, vocation, poverty, bridging the wealth gap," Harold said.

So if you're looking to jump into the world of crypto, experts say do your homework.

Cryptocurrency markets never close. You can trade 24 hours a day — and unlike stocks, cryptocurrencies are unregulated.

"The important factor to think about — look back four or five years," Harold said. "How many of the coins in the top 10 are in the top 10 now? And Bitcoin has remained number one all of this time. And that tells you something, which one of these has staying power."

Stephan Livera is a cryptocurrency expert. He recommends treating crypto as an investment.

Livera said there are risks. For example, your system can be hacked. So be sure to properly secure your information on a hard wallet.

Livera believes it could take another 10 years before cryptocurrency becomes more mainstream.

But you may be surprised to learn some of your favorite major retailers already take Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies — stores like Overstock, Home Depot and Starbucks just to name a few.
