This was all started by O.W Gurley, a wealthy Black entrepreneur who purchased 40 acres of land and named it Greenwood. Gurley had a vision to "create something built for black people by black people."

He loaned money to those who wanted to start businesses and helped encourage Greenwood to become self-sustaining. The community was self-educated, informed and very well versed in their legal rights. Other black entrepreneurs were inspired and moved to Greenwood. One of them, a lawyer, activist and entrepreneur JB Stradford invested significantly in Greenwood, sharing his beliefs that blacks had a better chance of success if they pooled together their resources, financial or otherwise.
